Franchising - Is it Safe to go into the Sea?
Or rather, is it safe to come out of the sea and onto the beach?
My personal business ownership over 25 years and my career in Business Excellence - during which time I developed and managed my own franchises, as well as direct experience in owning New Zealand based franchises for 7 years - has given me a range of perspectives on industries that are operating in the franchise environment in New Zealand.
My intention with this offering is to assist both non-franchise related owners - lets call them Free Independent Business People (either self employed or contractors) and franchise related owners (franchisees - [the customers] and franchisors [the owners]) to quickly analyse how well they may be suited to the industry - or not.
This short survey will possibly assist in in expanding your knowledge of what may lie ahead.
The goal of this exercise is for you - a prospective entrant into this type of industry - is to be able to more carefully determine the risks of stumbling into an organisation that lives and operates as per the EFQM Mediocrity Model (shown below). Sometimes, rather than 'exemplary models of excellence' we find that this model more adequately reflects the capability of organisations that are offering franchise 'opportunities'. This is another way of evaluating risk, prior to your purchase.
Download this free pre-purchase evaluation questionnaire for you to use when considering purchasing a franchise. These are the hard questions that people generally fail to ask, and learn at their own cost (dollars, stress and years of your life) what the true answers are, after they have mistakenly invested in a poorly run franchise. If you get the high scoring answers, you may well have found a brilliant, profitable franchise to buy!
